We had some great tips submitted on the topic of StumbleUpon, here are the top 5 tips:

  • “When tagging a site use tags that are more broad and less specific, these are more likely to be searched or stumbled. For example, “architecture”, “money”, “design”…” - Doodlebug
  • “Use eye catching headlines so that stumblers will be curious enough to click on. This is true for other aspects of promotion of your site, digg, del.icio.us and so and so forth.” - Spitfire
  • “Sites such as www.stumblexchange.com allow you to exchange stumbles and reviews with other members to improve your traffic. Be warned though I’m not sure how Stumbleupon feels about it.” - SUV
  • “Problogger has written an interesting post to do with running a successful stumbleupon advertising campaign, he discusses some of the things you should and shouldn’t do, check it out here” - Andy
  • “In my opinion what determines the sucess of stumble upon is the amount of people you have in your network. By adding friends you will increase the amount of users who will see your newly added webpages, making them more likely to give your site the thumbs up.” - Skipz

Thank you very much to Doodlebug, Spitfire, SUV and Skipz for contributing to TipsTree dot com

but the main problem with stumbleupon is that they use no follow technology

Stumbleupon is for the buzz, and traffic, more than a backlink.

My first website had over 3000 visits from stumbleupon. Thats not bad for a FREE campaign :)

Ankur, they do use the no-follow but they also send you a lot of visitors if people stumble your pages. These are great tips. I like this blog! This is a super neat idea to get great advice from others.

Thanks for the post. I saw you advertised stumblexchange, a site I use to use, but stopped when it had a lot of downtime and problems. I DO NOT own this website, but ’stumbled upon’ (haha) another called SUexchange . com, and thought you might want to take a look. It is the same idea, but it loads a lot faster. The only bad part is you lose a point when someone stumbles one of your site, or even claims they did. So someone could claim they stumbled everyones site, and everyone doesn’t want to lose that point, so they accept his claim and he gets a ton of stumbles for free.

Some good info here guys, I think StumbleUpon is great not only as a tool for wasting valuable time but to get FREE traffic. But what is the quality of visitors like, do they stay for long or even read the whole page? I think I’ll take a closer look at SUexchange, thanks for the suggestion Word Hugger.

Awesome information. I’m just getting started on my new site, and when it is all set, I’m going to dive into the world of social bookmarking. Thanks for the info.
